In 1997, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) reclassified all U.S. industries under a new code – the North American Industry Classification System, or NAICS. [OMB 1997] These classifications were used in the most recent Survey of Manufactures conducted by the Department of Commerce, as well as by other Federal agencies that collect data from industry. The NAICS codes for the petroleum industry are listed below. The move from SICs to NAICS resulted in some changes in the way industries are categorized.
